When it comes to dating, knowing what to look for can save you time, heartache, and confusion. Red flags are warning signs that someone may not be a healthy or compatible partner, while green flags signal emotional safety and long-term potential. Laurie Berzack, founder of Carolinas Matchmaker, joins Charlotte Today to discuss red flags and green flags in dating. “Dating is a process of discovery,” says Berzack.

So how do you tell the difference between a promising connection and a potential heartache? Start by watching for red and green flags: the subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs that can tell you a lot about someone’s emotional availability, respect, and long-term potential.

Red Flags to Watch Out For:

  • Inconsistent Communication: If they text nonstop for two days, then vanish for a week, that’s not mystery… it’s unreliability.
  • Disrespect for Boundaries: Pushing you to move faster than you’re comfortable with or ignoring a clear “no” is a major concern.
  • All Talk, No Action: Saying “we should do this” but never following through shows a lack of reliability.
  • Bitterness About Exes: If every ex is “crazy,” consider who the common denominator is.
  • Secrecy or Evasiveness: Dodging basic questions or being vague about their life is a red flag.

Green Flags That Signal a Healthy Partner:

  • Consistency: They follow through on plans and promises.
  • Respect for Your Pace: They’re tuned in to your comfort level and don’t rush you.
  • Good Communication: They listen, share openly, and don’t turn every conversation into a debate.
  • Kindness in Action: How they treat others…waiters, friends, family, often reveals their true character.
  • Shared Values: You align on life goals and relationship expectations, even if your hobbies differ.
